The Select Committee will visit Knysna Local Municipality to gather input before the possible dissolution of its council due to governance failures and service delivery issues.
A committee focused on local government will visit Knysna Local Municipality in the Western Cape this week. This visit follows a notice that the Western Cape government plans to use a section of the Constitution to dissolve the municipal council. This section allows the province to step in when a municipality fails to meet its duties.
The committee will talk to different groups to understand the situation. These groups include government officials, political parties, labor groups, business groups, and women’s and youth organizations. The municipal leaders will also share their views. The goal is to gather information on the plan to dissolve the council.
The provincial government pointed out that the municipality has had several years of problems with how it is run and delivers services. These problems include broken infrastructure, sewage spills, and water issues. The committee believes municipalities should provide good services and that any decisions must put the residents first. The committee will look at why the provincial government wants to dissolve the council. The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will then decide whether to approve or reject the dissolution within a certain timeframe.
