The King questioned the legitimacy of the province’s designation by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1497, who named it “Natal” upon arriving on Christmas Day.
“How can something that already exists be discovered? ” the King queried, contesting the colonial perspective that overlooked the presence, sovereignty, and civilization of indigenous peoples long before Europeans came.
