More than 150 women from Mattafeni and surrounding areas gathered at the Alliance Church today for a major community outreach initiative aimed at promoting women’s rights, dignity, and access to essential services. The event, hosted by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in partnership with the Mordecai Ndlovu Foundation (MNF), brought together government departments, civil society organisations, and local leaders in a unified effort to support and uplift rural women.
A Day of Empowerment and Practical Support
The programme was designed to ensure that the SAHRC remains closely connected to the lived experiences of communities in Mpumalanga. From early morning, women arrived in large numbers—seeking guidance, support, and answers to pressing concerns.
Throughout the day, attendees engaged in sessions covering critical areas such as:
- Access to justice and legal processes
- Gender-based violence awareness and reporting procedures
- Mental health and emotional wellness
- Identity documentation and Home Affairs services
- Family and social support systems
- Healthcare awareness and preventative care
Expert speakers facilitated open dialogue, demonstrations, and interactive discussions, creating a safe and supportive environment for learning, reflection, and healing.
Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration in Action
A significant feature of the outreach was the strong representation from key government and civil society partners, including:
- Department of Home Affairs
- South African Police Service (SAPS)
- Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB)
- Department of Social Development (DSD)
- GRIP (Greater Rape Intervention Programme)
- Department of Health
- Various local NGOs and community-based support groups
Each stakeholder contributed valuable information and on-the-spot assistance, ensuring that women received practical support tailored to their needs—whether related to safety, documentation, language rights, health, or social services.
Community Leadership at the Forefront
The success of the outreach was strengthened by the involvement of local leadership. The Alliance Church in Mattafeni played a central role by providing a welcoming venue, while Councillor Mkhonto and his Ward Committee ensured strong community mobilisation and participation.
Their efforts underscore the importance of local collaboration in achieving sustainable community development.
Recognising the Leaders Behind the Programme
Special acknowledgement was extended to Ms. Gugu Tshuma, Coordinator at the Mordecai Ndlovu Foundation, whose meticulous planning and dedication were pivotal in executing a well-organised and impactful event. Her continued commitment reflects MNF’s mission of reaching and uplifting underserved communities across Mpumalanga.
A Continuing Mission for Human Rights and Community Strengthening
The outreach forms part of a broader initiative by SAHRC and MNF to bring human rights education and services directly to communities. The organisations emphasised their commitment to ensuring that every individual not only knows their rights but is equipped to exercise them confidently and safely.
By listening to community concerns and providing accessible services, the partners aim to foster long-term solutions that build a more just and equitable society.
Gratitude and a Call to Action
Organisers expressed profound gratitude to the women who attended, the stakeholders who contributed their expertise, and the community structures that supported the initiative.
The event highlighted a powerful truth: when women are empowered, entire communities grow stronger.
