In the heart of Parys, a powerful story of innovation, resilience, and community upliftment is taking shape. Meet Lebohang Melato (28) a skilled mechanical and electrical technician who is steadily making his mark in South Africa’s renewable energy sector.
Born and raised in Parys, Melato grew up witnessing the harsh realities of high unemployment and unfulfilled potential. Like many young people in his community, he faced the frustration of joblessness firsthand.
“I saw many of my peers struggle to find employment, and when I found myself unemployed at 28, it hit close to home,” he shares. “But instead of giving up, I chose to look for solutions.”
That search led him to the renewable energy space. Recognising the untapped potential of solar energy in local communities, Melato founded Solar Flex Repairs and Maintenance (Pty) Ltd a business focused on solar component repairs and maintenance, while creating pathways for youth employment and skills development.
As Founder and Director, Melato is driven by more than profit. His mission is deeply rooted in community upliftment, particularly in Tumahole, where he hopes to inspire young people to believe in a future built at home.
“I want young people to see that they don’t have to leave Parys to succeed. Opportunities can be created right here,” he says.
His vision recently earned national recognition when he was invited to the IBT Summit 2026 in Johannesburg, where he participated in a prestigious Presidential Programme hosted by the Minister of Human Settlements. At the summit, Melato engaged with industry leaders and government officials, presenting his vision for a solar repair and maintenance facility and exploring strategic partnerships to scale his impact.
Beyond entrepreneurship, Melato is also committed to youth empowerment. He serves as a facilitator in Sasolburg, supporting young people through self-development and skills-building programmes.
“It’s about giving back and paying it forward. When you’ve been given a chance, you create chances for others,” he says.
