On Mandela Day 2025, the spirit of ubuntu came alive through a series of impactful initiatives led by the Mpumalanga Queens in Construction (MQC) under Basadi Civil Construction, in partnership with the Mordecai Ndlovu Foundation, the Commission for Gender Equality, St Marks School, and Ntsika Advisory. United in purpose, these organizations honored the legacy of Nelson Mandela by giving back to the communities of Nelspruit and Kanyamazane in meaningful ways.
Supporting Early Childhood Development at Buzzy Bees Pre-School
One key highlight took place at Buzzy Bees Pre-School in Nelspruit. The school, which serves as a vital learning space and safe haven for children, including those with Autism, received a generous donation of essential supplies. This effort was spearheaded by the Mordecai Ndlovu Foundation and the Commission for Gender Equality, whose support will significantly enhance the school’s resources and learning environment.
Principal Ira Pillay shared her heartfelt appreciation and recounted her personal journey of overcoming challenges to become a passionate educator. Her resilience and commitment to education continue to inspire not only her learners but the broader community. She also expressed her goal of completing a PhD in education by the age of 56—an ambition that reflects the very essence of Mandela’s vision for empowerment through education.
Home Renovation for a Deserving Family in Kanyamazane
Meanwhile, in Kanyamazane, a transformative home renovation project was undertaken for the Mabuza family in Extension 16. Living in unsafe and deteriorating conditions, the family was identified for support by MQC. Through the collective effort of local stakeholders, volunteers, and community members, the house was restored to a dignified, habitable state.
Generous donations and contributions came from a variety of sources:
- TILE and Deko – Paint and toilet systems
- Maxi Building – Doors
- Mordecai Foundation – Clothing for the family
- Ntsika Advisory – PPE for volunteers
- Rise FM – Media and outreach support
- Basadi Civil Construction – Paint brushes and window glass
- Sis Thandi (MQC) – Meals for volunteers
- Councillor Simphiwe – Cement
The project was a testament to what can be achieved when people unite for a common cause. The Mabuza family expressed deep gratitude, overwhelmed by the kindness and dedication shown by everyone involved.
Adding joy and energy to the day’s events was Deejay_Notrix, a talented presenter and music connoisseur from Rize FM, who brought uplifting sounds and heartfelt messages to the celebration.
Reaching Further: House Renovation in Likazi
In another impactful act of service, Mpumalanga Queens in Construction also renovated the home of a disabled youth in Likazi, Mpumalanga, continuing their commitment to empower vulnerable members of the community. This initiative was praised by Miss Patricia Anderson, founder of Mkhondo House of Hope, who reflected, “Nothing makes me happier than to give back to the community.”
A Legacy Continued
The Mandela Day 2025 celebration showcased the power of collaboration, compassion, and shared responsibility. It was more than a day of service—it was a movement of empowerment and hope. With dedicated individuals like Happy Ndlovu and the backing of committed organizations, the legacy of Nelson Mandela was not just remembered but actively lived out.
As Mandela once said, “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” This year’s Mandela Day embodied that spirit in action.
