When Raeez Kuhn, known to fans as DJ Eezo, stepped up to the decks for his first gig, he didn’t just play music — he made history. “I felt tears of joy,” he says, reflecting on that life-changing moment. “I could feel the crowd, feel their energy. I knew I was exactly where I belonged.”
Blind since early childhood, Kuhn’s journey to becoming a DJ is not just inspirational — it’s extraordinary.
A Dream Born from Rhythm and Adversity
Born in Sophiatown — a place with deep musical roots — and raised in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, Raeez lost his father in a tragic accident at the age of two. Soon after, he also lost his eyesight. “There was an operation that could have preserved some of my vision, but we couldn’t afford it,” he says. By 2011, he was completely blind.
Despite this, music became his refuge. A small keyboard his mother gave him as a child sparked a deep and lasting love for sound. “Music gave me purpose,” he says. “It was something I could feel, something that connected me to the world.”
Teaching Himself the Art of DJing — Without Sight
Inspired by radio DJs like DJ Kent, Eezo was determined to learn the art of mixing. “I started asking how DJs do what they do,” he recalls. A friend in Eldorado Park helped introduce him to mixing basics, and Kuhn took it from there.
Using a computer program called Virtual DJ, along with screen reading technology, he taught himself to mix entirely by sound and muscle memory. “I memorised the keyboard layout and used accessibility features most people don’t even know exist,” he explains.
Today, he uses TalkBack on his phone to manage social media, messages, and calls. At gigs, he works with CDJs and relies on his acute sense of rhythm and timing to control the decks. “I can’t see, and I don’t dance — but I feel the music. That’s all I need.”
Against the Odds, Towards the Dream
Now 26 years old, DJ Eezo has performed at private and commercial events, sharing stages with some of South Africa’s top talent. But the journey has been tough.
“I rely on a Disability Grant and help from friends. I don’t own my own DJ equipment, which makes it hard to get booked,” he admits. “Promoters are willing to give me gigs, but I need to be able to bring my own setup. That’s my biggest challenge.”
Despite financial instability, health setbacks in his family, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, he remains focused on his ultimate goal — to headline major festivals and become one of South Africa’s biggest DJs.
“I love DJing more than anything. It brings me joy. It brings me life.”
