In an inspiring move towards improving education in South Africa, the School Books Covering Campaign has emerged as a vital initiative dedicated to protecting and preserving educational resources for underprivileged students. By focusing on providing book covers for textbooks, this campaign ensures that learners across the country have access to quality educational materials that remain in good condition.
The School Books Covering Campaign is a community-driven initiative aimed at providing book covers for school textbooks, safeguarding them from wear and tear. By offering these essential covers, the campaign helps preserve the integrity of textbooks, ensuring that students can continue to use them throughout the academic year.
The initiative covers all types of school books, from general reading materials to important academic textbooks, empowering students to engage fully with their studies without the worry of damaged resources.
Origin and Motivation Behind the Campaign
The campaign was founded by Ms. Fikile Zulu, a Senior Graphic Designer and Social Media Coordinator, in 2024. Ms. Zulu was inspired to create this project after a conversation with a teacher at Chief Bambatha Primary School, who highlighted the challenges students faced when textbooks were damaged due to a lack of proper book protection. The idea was simple yet impactful: ensure that no student’s textbook was left unprotected, regardless of their financial background.
In January 2025, as the new school year began, the campaign officially launched, distributing book covers to schools in need, particularly in Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
Campaign Impact and Achievements
Since its launch, the School Books Covering Campaign has made significant strides in supporting learners and schools. To date, the campaign has successfully covered 1,502 school books, including a variety of textbooks. These covered textbooks are now more durable, allowing students to access educational materials in better condition.
While the exact number of students impacted is yet to be fully determined, the campaign has already reached a wide range of learners across the provinces of Gauteng and Mpumalanga, touching countless lives by providing essential resources for education.
Future Plans and Expansion

Looking to the future, the School Books Covering Campaign aims to expand its reach and impact even further. The Mordecai Ndlovu Foundation, has been a great support to the following projects:
- Supporting the Tshiamiso Astronauts program, a future initiative that will provide additional educational resources and opportunities for youth.
- Expanding the book covering efforts to more locations across Gauteng and Mpumalanga, ensuring that even more schools and underprivileged learners benefit from this campaign.
By continuing to provide vital support and resources, the School Books Covering Campaign seeks to make a lasting difference in the educational landscape of South Africa, helping to create a brighter, more empowered future for students.
The School Books Covering Campaign is an excellent example of how small efforts can have a far-reaching impact on education. By ensuring that textbooks remain in good condition, this initiative is helping to protect the tools students need to succeed in their studies. With continued support and expansion, the campaign will continue to foster positive change in South Africa’s education system, one covered book at a time.
